44 & X

We have made numerous visits to New York City, one of our favorite cities in all of our travels. When you’re there, it’s like visiting the world. We especially love going there in December, a magical time to be in Manhattan. It’s so enjoyable to walk around and see all the parks glittering with seasonal decorations and the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center. There’s also the store windows, the museums, the theater, the shopping and site seeing. We walk miles without even knowing it. Of course one of our favorite things to do is experience the array of restaurants and cuisines available in that metropolis.

It’s so hard to pick a favorite, but one of our favorite’s, especially when it’s a theater night, is 44&X (X representing 10th Ave.). This bistro has got it all – fantastic wait staff, quaint interior, great location, and food to die for. We have been to this restaurant more than once, mainly because of my wife’s love of their short ribs, one of her favorite dishes. The meat is melt in your mouth tender served with creamy smoked Gouda mashed potatoes, crispy pancetta, roasted wild mushrooms and a port wine reduction. I love the spicy salmon tartar appetizer served with daikon radishes and a soy serrano dressing. For the main course I really enjoy their pine nut crusted rack of lamb with quinoa goat cheese gratin, grilled asparagus and braised haricots verts.

This restaurant is a great theater district venue. Many of the waiters are hoping for their chance to make it on the Great White Way. Their drinks are named after Tony Award winners. The cuisine is American bistro and their vegetables change seasonally. The restaurant first opened its doors in October, 2000 in Hell’s Kitchen. It’s on the pricey side, but well worth it.
