Blooming is a process where you add warmed oil or water to a spice. A spice, such as saffron should be ground with a mortar and pestle or spice grinder and then added to the warmed oil or water and let sit for at least 10 minutes. This technique brings out the flavor of the herb, making it stronger and bolder. You can also bloom whole herbs by sauteing them in oil, being careful not to burn them or they will get bitter. The oil should be no hotter than medium heat. First warm up the oil and then add the herbs. Saute until they become aromatic, being careful not to brown them.
