I probably grew up loving good food and cooking much more than my sister, but she bought in to us foodies a little later in life.
As adults, we shared the love of cooking and sharing old and new recipes. As you would expect, sometimes we had to have a “cook off” as we both felt we prepared a common dish better than the other. Good old sibling rivalry never ended, but it was always done in fun and if I felt I was losing I would just tickle her and she would scream bloody murder and I felt vindicated. As children, we enjoyed the wonderful dishes of our grandmother and our aunt Margaret who married an Italian and learned some really delicious dishes from her mother-in-law. And, contrary to popular belief, we carried to adulthood some of my mother’s dishes that have been staples of good food through the generations. She didn’t like to cook, but what she did cook was good. And, lastly, my father and my godmother and godfather shared the love of cooking and we benefited from that love with many memorable meals.
My mother was the queen of black beans and rice and my father was the king of the Spanish tortilla. Aunt Margaret, was of course, the queen of all Italian cooking and my grandmother was the queen of Spanish cuisine. I learned how to make great meatballs and spaghetti sauce from my aunt. As for my godmother and godfather, they cooked together and always surprised us with dinners that included two entrees, like baked fish with potatoes, onions and wine and milanesa steak. My godmother was also a great baker and made the best Spanish cookies, called rosquias, that I have ever had. Unfortunately I don’t have that recipe.
I sadly lost my sister several years ago and I think about her all the time, especially when I’m cooking something that we both loved. This blog is a memory of the foods my sister and I loved and cooked and it is done with love in her honor and memory. Some of the recipes are family and some are recipes that she and I shared from books and magazines that we both loved. Other recipes are those that I have developed or picked up along my culinary journeys.
When you make any of the recipes from this blog, think of me and sis, and how much we wish we were with you to enjoy the good food.
