This recipe takes me back to my childhood when a quick summer meal was opening a can of beanie weenies and heating them up. Today, I have not seen them in a can any longer and I still love the flavor of pork and beans with weenies so I developed this recipe which I elevated it “somewhat”. Introduce your children to this retro dish. Easy and delicious!!! At least I think so.
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 28oz. Can of Pork and Beans, not drained.
- 1 Lb. hot dogs of your choice, sliced in 1/4 inch rounds. I recommend a good brand like Hebrew National or Nathan’s.
- 1/2 Cup ketchup
- 1/4 Cup dark brown sugar
- 1 Tbsp. yellow mustard
- 1/2 yellow onion, minced
- 2 Tbsp. bacon drippings
- 1 Tsp. kosher salt
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Melt the drippings in a medium pan.
- Add the onions and salt and sauté until the onions are almost caramelized.
- Add the hot dogs and stir fry until they begin to brown.
- Add the beans and stir until evenly mixed.
- Add the ketchup, brown sugar and mustard and stir until blended.
- Continue cooking on low heat for approximately 10 minutes.
Eat as is or top with a cheese of your choice, or some Fritos. Serve as a side with a grilled cheese sandwich.

Manuel this looks really good. I remember these in the can. Sounds like a good recipe to make on our family trip this summer to West Texas. I make a weenie casserole that uses potatoes, weenies, white sauce, onion and cheese. I served this often to my kids when they were growing up. I haven’t made it for my grandkids.
It’s a great dish for a party, especially if there are a lot of children. I think this recipe beats the canned version we all had as kids. I would love to have your recipe for your weenie recipe. Sounds delicious. Thank you for following my blog.
