Sedona, Arizona

When visiting our friends in Scottsdale, Arizona, we can’t resist driving up to Sedona and spending some time in that beautiful city. Surrounded by red rock mountains, the city bursts with great art, food and outdoor activities. The community is dotted with photographers, artists, hikers, jeepers, bikers, spiritual healers and, of course, tourists.

Sedona is surrounded by over 1.8 million acres of national forests. It has four wilderness areas and two state parks. One can spend hours just walking the streets and enjoying the many restaurants, shops and art galleries. But don’t miss the country side and the opportunity to see the many sights of the area. We enjoyed a jeep tour of the area and a side trip to the Chapel of the Holy Cross is a must. It is a Roman Catholic chapel built into the buttes of a mountain. The chapel was inspired and commissioned by Marguierite Brunswig Staude, a local rancher. It was completed in 1957.

We enjoyed many restaurants, but our favorite watering hole was at Javelina Cantina for one of the best margaritas I have ever had.

When in Sedona, I recalled staying at the Enchantment Resort for a business meeting a few years ago. From their website, “The dramatic red rocks of Sedona’s Boynton Canyon set the tone for an experience beyond compare. You’ll move and be moved through a unique and powerful connection to nature, exhilarating adventures, deep relaxation and the feeling of awe and wonder again and again.” The resort sits at the base of Boynton Canyon. Casitas serve as the guest rooms and suites and are part of the 70 acre establishment.

The restaurants at Enchantment Resort provide a scrumptious culinary experience. They have been featured in The James Beard House in New York City and boast award winning dishes. The dining rooms give you a spectacular look at the outdoors and makes you want to not leave until the next meal.  The dish that stood out to me and I have never forgotten was a version of eggs Benedict that incorporated southwestern flavors rather than the usual Canadian bacon and hollandaise sauce. They would not share the recipe but I came home and immediately duplicated it as best I could. I am happy to say, I think my recipe is as delicious as what I had at their restaurant.

Inspired by the indigenous ingredients of the Southwest, the Sedona restaurants at Enchantment Resort provide an epicurean experience unlike any other. Seasonal menus and award-winning dishes are prepared by a renowned culinary team recently featured at The James Beard House in New York City. While staying there, enjoy innovative cocktails, nourishing Southwest inspired cuisine and panoramic views of Boynton Canyon.
